A Village in England - July, 2089 A.D.

The Capping Day at Wherton, an apparently eighteenth-century village near Winchester. It celebrates the annual arrival of the Tripod, an enormous metal device stalking heavily over the land, to implant the Cap onto the shaved head of anyone who comes of age: this year it is Jack, the best friend of Will Parker, our hero. The Capping changes Jack, and Will is unhappy and disturbed. Outside the village are Vagrants, whose Cappings failed and left them wandering madmen: one, called Ozymandias after the poem he recites, has a purpose and kidnaps Will...
